Saint Hillary and Typhoon Trump

What happened?

How did America's elite and media have no clue as to the popularity of Donald Trump? Or of the aversion of the public to Hillary. Watching some of the TV news commentators today eulogizing the Clinton campaign, they sounded like they were canonizing her. Why were they so out of touch with the lay of the voting land?

I think that what has happened and what does happen is that these people only hang out with people of like mind and to them it seems like the whole country thinks like they do. They had no idea of what the have-nots and others outside their stratospheric social and business circles were thinking. This is why the big money was betting on Hillary at the gambling shops.

Trump's Troubles

Almost certainly, the first several months of Donald Trump's presidency will see at least one major challenge that will test the man and show something of his character and wisdom (or lack of it...time will tell). Some of his policies, if indeed he delivers on his promises, will bite him, and we shall see how he reacts. Will he retract promises? Will he say we misunderstood his meaning? Or will he break all the china in the china shop?

How is he going to cancel or unilaterally amend NAFTA without showing the world that one cannot rely on American promises? How will he renege on NATO commitments without alienating Europe? How will he bring manufacturing back to the USA without onerous import tariffs and consequential galloping price increases for consumer goods? How is he going to get Mexico to pay for that wall he wants to build? And will he really work to put Hillary into prison.

I see from Reuters today that President Obama said he trusts that the new president will rise above delivery of the promise to jail Clinton, so it does appear that some are taking Trump seriously. I wonder what implications the FBI investigations of Hillary's emails have for Obama.

Finally, I wonder how long it will be before someone tries to assassinate Trump. Among those that want an establishment Republican president, there may be those who would use violence to install the new VP into the head seat. Let's hope not. And Trump has other enemies too. I hope God chooses to keep him safe. We don't need violence.

I am really curious about how he plays the hand that the next 4 years will deal him.

  1. Social media has given people immense power over the news. People only "like" and "share" what they agree with, so news outlets have responded by catering directly to them. Now news outlets have such blatant biases that they alienate everyone who doesn't agree with them politically, thus causing them each to operate in their own little bubbles. I think this is what caused so many of them, and their viewers, to underestimate Trump's influence.
