Putin: the new Reagan?

The political ideology on the set of today’s world stage reminds me of the 1980s. Then we had the conservative leaders of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Brian Mulroney, amongst others. Today we have Putin and Trump, but a number of minor players in international politics who seem to be fans of the leader of modern conservatism, Vladimir Putin.

Putin has been successfully positioned as the bulwark against the liberalism that, to many people, threatens to separate western civilization from traditions bequeathed to it by 2500 years of cultural development.  In the 1980s, we had the West versus godless communism, and today we have Putin versus the godless west. He refers to Europe as Gayropa. The West is termed “infertile and genderless” and are accused by Putin of rejecting the basis of its success: Christian values. I expect you might not have known that Putin is, in some ways, the Ronald Reagan of today.

It should be no surprise if Trump and Putin seem to cozy up during the next few years.  And this isn’t because of Russian help for the Trump campaign. Frankly, I think that those accusations are red herrings tossed to us by Trump’s detractors to invalidate his election victory.
